Over 200 people have signed a petition urging Lincolnshire County Council to surface what is reputed to be the most used footpath in Holbeach.
On Thursday members of the Skinners Chase Action Group handed the petition to their county councillor Nick Worth.
Parish councillor and member of the group, Carol Rudkin, said: “The signatures were collected from people using the path whilst myself and other members were out and about.
“No special effort was needed to find people to sign the petition.”
Although the group has only been in existence for a few weeks, calls to have this route made up have been going on for over 30 years.
The path which links Langwith Gardens and Littlebury Gardens with Spalding Road, is a popular way for residents to walk to the town centre and for children to get to school.
However, the group says that when it rains the path turns into a mud bath with large puddles to negotiate.
Action group member Helen Scott said: “There are also raised manhole covers and parts of old concrete walk ways which have caused a number of accidents over the years.”
Mrs Scott has been researching the history of the issue and has passed on evidence to Coun Worth which shows that many of the residents of the area have a right of way over the Skinners Chase and the private road Stukeley Hall Drive.
She said: “The fact that the pathway leads on to a private road has always been a stumbling block.
“However, as it would appear that the majority of the people who use this route have a legal right to do so granted to them in the deeds of their properties this will hopefully encourage the county council to include these works in their future plans.”
