Wallis duo retain their 2-up time trial championship at Spalding Cycling Club

Last Tuesday night saw the return of the special 2-up time trial event at Spalding Cycling Club.

A last-minute course change on the day due to roadworks saw the two-person teams take on the 10.6-mile out and back course.

Holders Josh and Frazer Wallis combined to take the win with a time of 21.30mins as they retained their grasp of the 2-up cup.

It was an extremely tight battle for second with the team of Neil Palmer and Andy Bowser pipping a very impressive Chris Ward and Kieran Buffham (road bike) with only two seconds between them.

Matt Chapel and Mark Hills combined for a strong fourth place finish ahead of Dan Warner and Gareth Richards.

Of the mixed pairings it was returning rider Chris Bettinson and Susie Hall just beating Julie Wright and Simon Howard with times of 29.47mins and 30.14mins respectively.

  • Spalding CC had two strong results at The Tour Of Cambridgeshire closed roads time trial last Saturday.

The 16.4-mile course started from the Peterborough Showground and loop out towards Folksworth and back.

In the individual event Spalding has a sole representative in Barry Drew, who came home in a fantastic sixth place in his age category as he battled the windy conditions to finish in a time of 50.0mins.

The team event took place over the same course and again Spalding had representation in the ‘4 skins’ category.

The quartet of Keiran Buffham, Josh and Frazer Wallis and ex-JLT Condor rider Ali Slater, who now represents Clancy Briggs Cycling Academy, roared to a dominant victory by nearly five minutes – stopping the clock in a time of 35.52mins.

  • Sunday saw Chapel and Hills take on the Wisbech 25-mile time trial event.

Despite it being the first time either rider had done time trialling on a dual carriageway course, it was a successful day.

Chapel finished with a new PB of 59.26mins to take seventh overall.

Hills finished off a strong week for the club with a time of just over the hour.

  • There was a strong turnout for Spalding Cycling Club’s latest ten-mile time trial league meet – despite a torrential rain downpour just before the race.

Cycling on the slightly longer out and back Pode Hole course again, there was a new face at the top of the times this week with Neil Palmer (23.24mins) back to his best and pipping second-placed Chris Ward by a four-second margin.

Frazer Wallis came home third, while Kieran Buffham put in another impressive ride to again be the fastest road bike with a time of 24.15mins.

One to watch in the coming weeks is the midfield battle between Mark Hills, Gareth Richards and Dan Warner, with only 21 seconds separating the trio.

  • Bank Holiday Friday also saw Palmer and Ward take on the VTTA 50-mile TT in Cambridge.

On the day the overall win was taken by Matt Smith with a time of 1.39.09hrs.

But very impressive performances from both Palmer and Ward saw them take 14th and 16th respectively with times of 1.49.11hrs and 1.50.39hrs.
