Sunday football: Super Sutton St James storm into final with five-star success

Red-hot Sutton St James have booked a place in the final of the King’s Lynn and District Sunday League’s Queen Elizabeth Cup.

Division Two side St James, who have endured a tough season in the league, beat mid-table West Winch William Burt 5-2 at the Fred Hoyles Memorial Ground on Sunday.

Matty Clayden, Max Burrell (2), Ash Bower and Michael Ocock grabbed the goals to send the Lincolnshire side through to their second final in three seasons.

Travis Mortimer and Dylan Pottle got Burt’s consolation goals, but St James will now play either March or CSKA Reserves in the final.

That semi-final tie will be played on Sunday, March 26.

Elsewhere, Tydd St Mary, – at the 11th time of asking – recorded their first points and win of the Division Two season with a 5-3 victory over Lincolnshire neighbours Fleet UC.

The memorable win was secured thanks to Josh Leet (2), Ryan Dennis (2) and Darren Andrews.

Fleet certainly made a game of it and scored through Connor Rothwell and Shane Bidwell (2).

Tydd are now three points behind Fleet in the table.

  • Sutton Bridge United extended their lead at the top of the Spalding Sunday League to five points after thrashing fourth-placed Punchbowl Tigers 8-3.

Jake Lally and Joe Sutton both bagged braces for the table-toppers at Memorial Park, with Rob Hook, Jack Murley, Aaron Rouse and Kurt Scott also on target in the only league game to be completed over the weekend.

The semi-finals of the Mont Pell Trophy did take place, though, with Jubilee and Mulberry in commanding positions.

Indeed, Jubilee thrashed hapless South Holland United FC Clarets 11-0 at Holbeach St Marks to all but seal their place in the showpiece.

Jack Wycherley led the way with a four-goal haul, while Leigh Boekestyn hit a hat-trick.

There was also a double for Kev Nottingham, while Chris Taylor and Scott Britton completed the scoring.

The other last four clash is finely poised, with Mulberry beating Spalding Wanderers 2-0 at Monkshouse Lane.

Wanderers, who had Chris Wood sent off, will hope to overturn that deficit when the second legs are played on March 19.
