Steve’s fantastic finish seals Westcombe Trophy win

Spalding Golf Club’s coveted Westcombe Trophy is now in the hands of Steve Worboys after he saw off Joe Slater in a fantastic final.

Worboys, who plays off a 27 handicap at the Surfleet course, edged out 12-handicapper Slater 1up in the individual matchplay knockout competition.

After a nervy front nine Worboys was 1up. But Slater, who was giving his opponent 15 strokes edged in front briefly after winning the 14th.

However, Warboys –whose short game was excellent throughout – won three of the last four holes to take the trophy 1up.

The losing semi-finalists were Wayne Flowers and Dave Perrott.

  • James Carles (22 handicap), although one stroke adrift of the leader going into the final round of the 36-hole Club Trophy strokeplay competition, carded a best-of-the-day nett 71, which, added to his opening round nett 66, gave him a 137 winning total, three strokes clear of the field.

It also earned him a handicap reduction from 22 to 18.

In second place was Andy Thomas (66+75=141) on 141, with Keith Williams (66+77=143) in third spot on 143.

Other leading scores came from: 144 – Charles Lacey; 145 – Matthew Richardson; 146 – Mike Yould; 147 – David Bark; 148 – Nick Edwards.

  •  Talented 14-year-old Hugo Kedzlie finished in eighth place at the Telegraph BMW junior golf championship, which was played at the Quinta do Lago resort in Portugal.

Kedzlie, the youngest player ever to qualify for this event, had rounds of 72+80+79 for a 231 total in the 54-hole strokeplay tournament.

The boys’ title was won by Portugal’s number one golfer, 18-year-old Vitor Lopes, while the girls’ title winner was 18-year-old India Clyburn, who is the English Girls’ Amateur Champion from Woodhall Spa.

The event was plaugued by horrendous weather conditions on the last two days. Continuous heavy rain and storms actually resulted in the European Tour’s Portugal Masters tournament – which was played a short distance up the coast – being reduced to a 36 hole competition.

  • In another summer knock-out competition, Tom Cherry (23 handicap) won the ‘Rabbits Cup’ after beating John Sharrocks (28) 3&1, in another good quality final.

All square at the turn, with both players winning three holes apiece, Cherry edged in front by winning the 14th. He then sealed the victory by winning both the 16th and 17th to become ‘Rabbits’ champion 2014. The losing semi-finalists were Roy Blake and Monty Brittain.
