Steady improvement for Molsom at Silverstone thanks to ‘useful’ second race

Spalding speedster Andy Molsom endured another difficult time of it in the Caterham Graduates Racing Club SigMax Championship at Silverstone.

Molsom went into Silverstone – after a frustrating start to the season – with a day testing the car prior to the races at the GP circuit in May.

A busy test day changing the cars set-up to improve the handling was constructive, with Molsom feeling more comfortable with the car.

However, he was still not keeping pace with the front runners.

Qualifying saw Molsom out on his own, mostly with very little slipstreaming possibilities. Slipstreaming is a huge part of the Silverstone GP circuit with the long straights and fast corners, as a good tow is worth 1.5 to two seconds per lap.

Molsom qualified 25th and 22nd on the road out of a large mixed grid of 52 cars for the two races.

He made a great start to the first race, where he had made up four places after the first few corners, but got pushed down the order later in the first lap, and spent the rest of the race trying to recover. Ultimately finishing 20th was disappointing.

The second race was later that day, and Molsom started 22nd, in a much different race.

He could push harder with confidence and was fighting for position every lap of the 30 minute race, and finished in 15th place.

Molsom said: “The first race was difficult. Despite a good start I got bogged down and shuffled down the order by being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and couldn’t really recover.

“The second race, however was great. I was able to fight for position and five of us regularly changed places around every lap.

“It became a test for me and the car, and was very useful.”

Molsom is back in action at Thruxton in July.
