Spalding trio beat 19 teams to county title

Spalding Golf Club has won another county competition – the Sir Henry Lunn Shield.

They came out on top of the 19 teams of three, who were representing all of the top clubs in the county.

Played at the Surfleet course this year, the Spalding team of John Reynolds (11 handicap), Phil Wakefield (13) and Wayne Wallace (4) lifted this prestigious trophy in a Stableford competition, full handicap, played over 36 holes, with all three players aggregate scores to count.

Reynolds had scores of 37+28=65pts, Wallace 28+39=67pts, and Wakefield 39=34=73pts giving them a winning total of 205pts.

In second spot with 203 was Carholme, with Louth (201) and Elsham (200) third and fourth respectively.

Phil Wakefield also won the R&A silver chalice for the best individual aggregate score of the day.

Both Wallace (now 3) and Wakefield (12) received handicap reductions.

Spalding have won this trophy three times now, way back in 1992 and 1983.

•  The 1st team mathematically kept their title hopes alive with a 3-3 result at Toft Hotel in their latest South Lincs Scratch League match.

First out, talented teenagers Oliver Mitchell and Harry Hunt won 3&1, and with the next three pairs losing, late wins from Simon Richardson and James Crampton (2&1), and Wayne Wallace and Mark Cooley (4&2) ensured they shared the points.

Spalding remain in third place in the league below Blankney and Belton Park but have them both to play at the Surfleet course.

• The mixed team completed the double over their counterparts at Sleaford GC winning 4.5-3.5 away, the same score as the early season match at Surfleet.

Winning pairs for Spalding were captains Peter Bridge and Jenny Wilson (5&4), Andy Reedman and Beryl Skinner (3&2), Neil West and Carole Holland (4&3), and Monty Brittain and Maureen Orwell (6&5). Peter Orwell and Margaret Barkway halved their game.

• Fifty four golfers played in the Wednesday evening 13-hole Stableford competition – and with strong winds only ten of them played to par or better.

Trevor Laud was one of those, winning with 33pts from Mark Payne in second place with 30.

Best ladies’ score was 23 from Jackie Bailey-Scott.

Laud had his handicap reduced by one stroke to 10.
