Spalding Golf Club’s Andy does club proud with top ten finish at Welwyn

Spalding Golf Club champion and current first team captain Andy Grimwood was on top form representing the club in the Commemoration Jug Trophy at Welwyn GC.

The competition, for club champions from England, was inaugurated in 1988 to commemorate Sir Nick Faldo winning the 1987 Open Championship.

On day one Grimwood was one of only five competitors to break par with a superb 69, leaving him joint third.

On day two, and with the assistance of current Spalding vice captain Dave Tasker on the bag, windy conditions came into play and he finished with a 75, which still ensured an excellent top ten finish.

  • One of the busiest weekends of the year at Spalding’s Surfleet course saw junior captain Calum Lewis win the much coveted Presidents’ Putter competition.

The six-handicapper recovered from a double bogey start on the first hole with five birdies to card a stunning net 65.

That enabled him to fend off the challenge of friend and former juniors captain Calum Walker (5), who was one shot behind with 66.

It wasn’t all youngsters heading the leaderboard however, with young at heart Trev Laud (10) in third place with 68.

He was followed by big hitter Dan Mayfield (12) on 69 and Mick Bell (23), also on 69.

  • Sunday saw one of the most enjoyable days of the season, The Rabbits Open Day, which was contested by 16-28 handicappers both from the club and from other clubs around the county and beyond.

Superbly organised by Rabbits captain Stu Parker and his vice Andy Rafferty, with the support of the club, it was home golfers who lifted the prizes.

Stevie Hall won the morning 13-hole competition, while Dave Fitter raised the roof by winning the 18-hole competition in the afternoon with a superb 41 points. Fitter edged home on countback from Paddy Wheeler.

  • The previous weekend’s July medal saw 150 golfers on course – and 14 handicapper Andy Cunnington came out on top with a nett 67. He just edged out Matt Richardson (9) on 68. One shot further back were Nick Illingworth, Simon Eagle, Calum Walker and Nick Edwards.

Overall, a total of 18 players shot par or under on the day.

  • Captain Ray Harrison hosted a gents friendly match against King’s Lynn – and honours were even as the teams fought out a 3-3 draw.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Carl Sewell and John Reynolds, John Crampton and Pete Gooderson and Graham Chamberlain and Bob Sutton.
