FRIENDLY FOE: Warren Nel starred against his old club.

Skegness rocked by super Spalding

Ahead of their local derby with Long Sutton, Spalding enjoyed a statement win over Skegness to remain top of the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division.

The league leaders from the past two weeks came together and it was current leaders Spalding who romped to an 186 run away win.

Batting first they amassed a huge 263-6 which proved far too much for the home side.

The innings was built around a brilliant knock of 112 from opener Warren Nel.

He anchored the innings perfectly to provide the platform for victory.

Captain Josh Newton was also in the runs for the second week running scoring 67 and there was an important cameo from Tim Manton (20).

The win was then wrapped up in double quick time as the home side were bowled out for just 77 with Roy Tilley in fine form.

He took 5-41 as Skegness were blown away.

Brandon Andrews and Jack Barrett both picked up a wicket apiece to go with a run out.

Skipper Newton was left delighted at the showing that keeps Spalding top of the table.

They’re five points clear of Sleaford who enjoyed a win at Freiston and now 30 points ahead of a Skegness side who have slipped to fourth after two consecutive defeats.

“I wasn’t quite expecting that kind of result,” he said. “To pull off a great performance like that at a title rival is great.

“It came from an all round team performance.

“It was a formidable score that we posted and that just builds up and creates the pressure on the team that’s replying.

“They lost a few early wickets and then just crumbled under that pressure.”

Next up for Spalding is the home game against Long Sutton at the Memorial Ground on Saturday.

“There’s always a little bit of rivalry between us,” Newton continued. “There’s a few of us that have played for them and they’ve a few that have played for us which always makes it interesting.

“We’re all really looking forward to the match.

“We’ve got to keep the winning run going.

“We’ve got to keep training and keep up the level of performance that we’ve put in during the last two weeks.”

pSpalding 2nd XI were defeated by a strong Marking Deeping 2nd side who went to the top of the South Lincs and Border League Division One table.

Deeping certainly enjoyed the batting conditions at the Memorial Ground and made the most of them, beginning with a fine opening partnership from Connor Gillett (51) and Richard Witt (41).

The latter was ousted by Chris Green (1-45) caught behind Matt Gill who also ended up Gillett’s innings on 51 via the bowling of Eddie Seymour.

But number three Matthew Rose came in and promptly hit a fine 83 to put his side in a strong position.

Eddie Seymour bowled well taking 4-34 including that of Rose caught by Spyke Stainton.

But a swift 45 not out from John McDougall helped Deeping up to 246 for 5 at the close of their 45 overs.

It was a total Spalding 2nd never troubled as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

Several of the batting order managed to get into the teens, but the highest score was 17 until Gill came in at number eight to provide a battling 42.

By that point the game was out of reach however and Spalding were 133 all out in the 41st over.
Deeping’s Joe Pearson and Thomas Anderson both claimed 4-39 from 12 overs for the table-topping visitors who are six points clear of Belton Park.
