Pedestrian safety concerns raised about bus station

Safety concerns have been raised following an accident at Spalding Bus Station last week.
A 93-year-old man was taken to the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham – where he later died – after being hit by a bus at the Winfrey Avenue station.
Police were forced to close the road for more than four hours after the accident while road traffic collision investigators examined the scene.
And this has prompted calls for action to be taken about making the bus station more safe for pedestrians.
Coun Gary Taylor, who represents the Spalding Castle ward, explained that these issues have already been highlighted at a recent Spalding Town Forum meeting.
He commented: “It was bad news regarding the accident at Spalding Bus Station last week. The Town Forum has raised safety concerns in the past.
“We now need to work with all those concerned to make safety improvements to Spalding Bus Station.”
The Town Forum meeting where the concerns were raised had been attended by Maxine Stukins, who is the senior highways officer at Lincolnshire County Council.
Councillors felt that the bus station was not safe for pedestrians crossing over into the nearby shopping area.
However, they were told that, because there was no footpath at the side of the bus station where the shopping area is, a pedestrian crossing would not be added.
Maxine commented: “The area does have several points that are safe for pedestrians to use, but unfortunately they are not being used. The safest way is not always the quickest way.”
Anyone who saw the accident at Spalding Bus Station last week and has not yet spoken to police should call the collision witness appeal hotline on 01522 558855, quoting incident number 125 of August 23.
