Pianist Gwen Baslington, Deirdre Moden and Reverend Frances Ballantyne celebrate 20 years of the The Shoppers’ service at Broad Street Methodist Church.

Longevity for short service

A special church service set up specially for people with a busy schedule has celebrated its 20th anniversary.

The Shoppers’ Service at Broad Street Methodist Church in Spalding lasts just 15 minutes every Tuesday morning from 10.45am amid a weekly coffee morning that starts at 10am.

It is taken by a different person every week and was set up by Reverend Jenny Park in 1999 “to give an opportunity to anyone for a short period of worship, a time to be still in a busy schedule,” a spokesman said.

They continued: “This was also meant to benefit those who couldn’t get to church on a Sunday, for those who needed a time of reflection, or a time to explore their faith, it was open to all, whatever their needs.

“It was a new venture and there were only a handful of people attending at first, but over the years it has evolved into a well attended ecumenical gathering, through the dedication and commitment of many people both past and present.

“This 15 minute informal service attracts visitors, regulars, and those from other churches.”

The 20th anniversary was celebrated with memories and reflections led by Rev Frances Ballantyne and Deirdre Moden finishing with a Methodist’s traditional tea.

Broad Street Methodist Church will be holding a Service of Light at 3pm on Sunday, November 3.

Candles will be lit in memory of departed loved ones.
