Leaders Tulips B back on-song to extend advantage

Tulips B are eight points clear at the top of Spalding and District Snooker League Division One after shading a tight tussle with Donington A 4-2.

Wins for Mark Woodberry (O35), Ady Sibley (R7) and Darren Woodberry (O28) – who made a 28 break – were enough for the Spalding side.

That, coupled with a 4-2 win for Tulips A over second-placed Donington C, leaves the table-toppers in command of the top flight.

Services A had a big chance to close the gap on the leaders as they crammed in two games last week, but could only bag six points of the 12 on offer.

They lost 4-2 against Long Sutton A thanks to a last-gasp Sean Swinburn (O49) win over Jon Bettinson (scr), but did at least defeat Consti F 4-2 two days later.

A 22 clearance from Pete Mullane (O21) in a black ball win over Justyn Stanley (scr) proved key for the title hopefuls, with Bettinson (scr) grabbing the vital final frame.

The best break in the top tier came from Pyramid B’s Spencer Dawkins (O48), as his side picked up a vital 4-2 victory at Boundary B.

Dawkins made a fine 45 en-route to winning his frame, while Jason Green (O56) sunk a 25 clearance to seal his frame and Dave Pearson (O14) clinched the overall victory by edging out Dan Smith (O21).

Another man on form was Holbeach A’s Jem Merrison. The O35 handicapper made breaks of 35 and 28 to help his side defeat Holbeach D 4-2, despite Donald Monk’s (O7) cool 23 break.

In Division Two, Consti B closed the gap on leaders Bourne SC A to just one point with a 4-2 win at friendly foes Consti I. They looked on for maximum points when John Christian (R7), Steve Spencer (R21) and Martin Fear (O7) won the first three frames, but David Twelves (R14) and Richard Geddes (R14) hit back to deny the B side top spot.

A 30 break from Mick Johnson (O35) was the highlight in that derby.

Third-placed Boundary A came a cropper 4-2 against Consti G thanks to a final frame victory by Stewart Lilley (R7).

In the big game at the bottom, Pyramid D earned a 5-1 win at basement boys Services B. Lee Davies (O14) led the way for the Bourne side with a 23 break.

Down in Division Three, Services D remain top after a 4-2 success against Consti E. Tanya Peel (R14) was the match-winner at the death.

It was a good week for Boundary C, who are just four points off the top two after a 5-1 win at Whittlesey B, while Whittlesey C are just two points further back in fifth after a 4-2 win at Sutton C.

Lol Hailstone’s (R7) black ball win over David Lefley (scr) in the final frame settled that one.

  • It was a week of whitewashes in Spalding and District Billiards League as three teams enjoyed maximum 7-0 successes.

Consti A picked up seven points from their win over Holbeach B, with Robert Adams (R40), Peter Tingle (R90) and Lindsay Porter (R40) – who made a 23 break – all victorious. It was harsh on Holbeach, though, as they managed a very decent 579 aggregate points.

Pyramid A’s 7-0 win at Consti D was much more comprehensive, with John Twell (R60) and Eric Wyer (R50) making scores of 20 and 25 respectively.

The other big winners were Crowland B, who routinely dispatched Pyramid B 7-0. Star man Rob Childs (O200) led the charge with breaks of 54, 40 and 38, while Paul Holland (R70) also chipped in with a 24 and an unfinished 21.

There was only a fifth win of the season for basement boys Gosberton, who prevailed 5-2 at Crowland A.

Jack Craft (R90) and Malc Dennis (R110) grabbed the vital frame wins.

Also winners were Holbeach A, as Des Forbes (R50) made a fine 39 in a 4-3 triumph over Consti B.
