Indoor bowls: Spalding ease through in two cups

Spalding moved into the latter stages of both the Denny Cup and Egham Trophy with two comfortable victories last weekend.

In the Denny Cup (men’s competition), Spalding faced Grantham on a home and away basis. After five ends, Spalding were 24-17 up and by the halfway stage had increased their lead to 15 shots.

It was at that stage that Spalding pulled clear and at 15 ends were 31 shots clear. The final score was 95-57 to Spalding.

Rink scores: home – David Staples, John Needham, Ben Wilson and Graham Smith 35 Bill Brunton 5. Bob Davis, Kevin Ekins, Ashley Caress & Paul Simpson 23 Alistair Brunton 12.
Away – Jordan Philpott, Maurice Elding, Andy Dawson and Matt Whyers 18-21 Matt Orrey. Rhys Hill, Martin Simpson, Martin Spencer and Simon Lilley 19 Dion Auckland 19.

In the Egham Trophy (mixed competition), Spalding cruised through in their match against Stamford.
They took an early lead and increased it at every stage of the match to take the spoils by 128 shots to 56.

Rink scores: home – Ruby Hill, Judy Jackson, Ashley Caress and Simon Lilley 29 Keith Rippin 20. Lucy Cooke, Chelsea Tomlin, Ben Wilson and Martin Spencer 43 Pete Edwards 3.
Away – Jordan Philpott, Val Bowker, Annie Bellamy and Paul Simpson 32 Cliff Watson 12. Rebecca Simpson, Gloria Haney, Matt Whyers and Graham Smith 24 Roger Martin 21.

Friendly round up: Spalding had a challenging return match against Grantham last Saturday.

Grantham quickly got off the mark and maintained the lead throughout the game, the final score 117-77. Spalding ended up with one tied rink and one winning rink consisting of Ivy Tyler, Ron Townsend and skip Mick Jennings, who was captain of the day.
