Impressive 21-point back nine steers Dave to Spalding glory

Dave Colwell saw off more than 140 rivals to land one of Spalding Golf Club’s coveted Burton Cup prize on Saturday.

The 14-handicapper had six pars on a 21-point back nine to win the competition with 40 Stableford points at the Surfleet course.

Colwell, who won by just one point, received a two-shot handicap cut for his performance.

He was closely followed home by Trev Horrocks and Andy Ladbrook (both 39 points), while Simon Rothwell, Tommy Hull, Dave Inglis, John Goode and Anthony Murphy all managed 38 points.

  • Sam Rate tops the leaderboard after the first round of the Lincs Free Press Trophy with a nett 70 after 18 holes of this 36 hole competition.

Improving youngster Alex Callaway and 11-handicapper Simon Gray are sitting just one shot behind on 71, as is first team captain Andy Grimwood.

Fellow first-teamer Simon Richardson one shot further back on 72. The second round of the competition is in August.

  • Ray Harrison and his gents team pulled off a notable 3.5-1.5 away win at King’s Lynn – the first Spalding have managed for many years.

Wins came from Harrison and Chris Huggins, John Crampton and Pete Gooderson and Graham Chamberlain and Bob Sutton, while Carl Sewell and John Reynolds halved.

  • Spalding’s mixed team then beat KIng’s Lynn 5.5-4.5 at home, with wins coming from Ray Harrison and Chris Vickers, Roger Brown and Di West, Neil West and Lesley Williams, Bob Sutton and Millie Thorold and Alan Roper and Hannah Thorold.

Keith Williams and Angela Roper halved their game.

  • Four Spalding members are taking on the Longest Day Challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Research.

Chris Huggins, Frank Martino, Ian Ford and team captain Dougie Alexander will play four rounds of golf in one day at the Surfleet course on Sunday, June 21.

That entails 16 miles of walking – if they stay on the fairway – and around 400 golf shots apiece. First tee off will be at 4am, with the quartet hoping to be finish by 8pm.
