Hayes back as Minister for Transport after just 14 months in Home Office

South Holland and the Deepings MP John Hayes has reverted to being Minister of State for Transport after just over a year at the Home Office.

As Minister for Security – a role he was given after the Conservatives’ General Election victory in May 2015 – he reported to then Home Secretary Theresa May.

Now Prime Minister, she has appointed him to his previous role where his responsibilities will be national roads, Highways Agency reform, Infrastructure Bill, maritime and Commons spokesman on bus policy.
He will report to Transport Secretary Chris Grayling.

Mrs May was a Remain supporter in the recent EU referendum, whereas Eurosceptic Mr Hayes voted Leave.

He also supported Leave campaigneer Michael Gove’s bid to become leader of the Conservative Party, telling this paper that the new Prime Minister needed to be a Brexiteer.
