Girls allowed in church choir for first time in 700 years

For the first time in 700-years, a Spalding choir is set to allow females in.

St Mary and St Nicholas Parish Church have decided ‘it’s time for change’ and are now allowing women and girls into the choir.

Under the direction of organist and choir master, Nicholas Pitts, the choir has long been regarded as one of the best male choirs in the country.

Nick said: “I’ve often been asked why girls haven’t been allowed to join the choir and I suppose it was all about a long-held tradition really.

“But in these times of equal opportunities Rev John Bennett and myself, along with the support of the boys and men of the choir, have decided it’s time for change”

Over the years Spalding Parish Church Choir has sung at many cathedrals, including Lincoln, Winchester and Salisbury, as well as St. George’s Chapel, Windsor and In 2019, the choir had the honour of singing at St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.

As the new school term starts, Nicholas is inviting boys and girls to take up a new challenge to join the choir and meet new friends.

A spokesman for the choir said: “You don’t have to be religious – it’s all about singing – and friendship!

“Before they became famous, many well-known pop stars sang in a choir including Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry.

“Besides singing in church on a Sunday, there’s the added bonus of a choir club.

“Nick and a band of loyal volunteers run the club on Wednesday afternoons between 3 and 6pm.”

The club involves sports, games, craft activities or time to just socialise with refreshments.

During the school holidays it puts on outings to the seaside or swimming and bowling.

There is no charge to join the choir or the club – and the outings are also completely free.

Boys and girls (aged seven or over) are welcome to attend the choir club, which starts up again on Wednesday September 14 between 3pm and 6pm at the Vista Hall (next to the church).
