Flight camp for air cadets

camp1Twelve cadets and two staff members from 1406 (Spalding) Squadron attended an annual camp hosted by Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing at Joint Helicopter Command Aldergrove in Ireland.

The cadets visited different areas of the base such as the photo section, dog section, five army air corps, fire section and many others, to gain an insight into military life.

Uniform and room inspections were carried out each morning, with scores going towards the best cadet and inter-flight competitions. Cadets were kept busy in the evenings with social events such as bowling, sports and cinema visits.

All cadets were given the opportunity to undertake a swimming proficiency test, and 1406 came away with nine cadets gaining their basic certificate.

Cadets interested in joining the forces were given work experience opportunities.

Five cadets from Spalding were lucky enough to spend the afternoon working with serving members of the forces.

Four cadets joined the engineering section for an afternoon of working on aircraft and Cdt Ransome joined the logistics section, saying: “It was a great experience and has given me a great insight into what I have in store for a future career.”

Throughout the course of the week there were flying opportunities for the cadets, with names being drawn out of a hat for a chance to fly in a Gazelle AHI or a Defender aircraft.

The final day saw the results of the Inter-Flight competition results announced and Spalding’s own Flt Sgt Lockie saw her flight win both the Inter-Flight comp and the Drill competition.

To round off the week an end of camp party was thrown where cadets could relax.
