Market Place in Spalding is to undergo block paving repairs to the road and footpaths.

Five-week £40,000 repairs programme for Spalding town centre block paving

Block paving in a poor state in Spalding’s Market Place and Hall Place is to be replaced.

A five-week £40,000 programme of repairs to the road and footpaths, scheduled to start on Tuesday, August 30, has been announced by Lincolnshire County Council.

A spokesman said: “They have been timed to cause minimum disruption to businesses, and will also avoid any community events planned to take place within the town centre.”

The work will lead to the market being displaced temporarily – probably to Sheep Market.

South Holland District Council cabinet member Roger Gambba-Jones is pleased to see the repair work getting under way, after first highlighting uneven surfaces two years ago.

He said: “The reason I started it initially was because I had a letter from a gentleman who had a fall outside the British Heart Foundation Shop.
“He actually did not wish to register a formal complaint but I said I would on his behalf as a general observation. I ended up taking about 120 photos and submitted a sample of 30 to 40 reports.

“I’m extremely pleased this is happening in an area where we’re encouraging people to walk. We’re going to see it restored and put back to how it was – and the sooner, the better.”

The block paving works in Market Place was originally done in 1995 and the works in Hall Place was carried out in 2002.

The county council is also carrying out “essential resurfacing” in Sheep Market. The road and car park will be closed on Sunday, August 21, and Monday, August 22.
