The Voice of Spalding and South Holland
Darrel Cross saw off a large field to win the coveted EGU Gold Medal Qualifier event in Spalding Golf Club’s men’s section last week.
The fomer Trilby Tour champion, who plays off handicap of 12, carded a nett 67 at the Surfleet course to fend off Mike German on countback.
Just one shot behind in third position was Steve Baxendale, who finished with a very creditable 68.
Also just off the pace were Calum Walker and Mike Longley (all 69) and Bill Prosser, Gary Palmer, Geoff Moyses and Steve Camm (all 70).
- Some 150 golfers took to the Surfleet course in near gale-force conditions for the May medal – and it was no surprise that some high scores recorded (standard scratch of 74).
The wind didn’t bother 10-handicapper Mark Payne, who won on countback from Martin Baker with a nett 72.
Other leading scores: 72 – Joe Slater, Simon Rothwell, Dick Parker, Ted Portass; 73 – Trevor Overson; 74 – Mike Murphy, Trev Laud and Calum Walker.
- Ray Harrison and his mixed team enjoyed a great 7-1 home win over Milton.
Winning pairs were Ray and Chris Vickers, Pete Gooderson and Elaine Harrison, Max Ellis and Ann Tasker, Steve Baxendale and Olive Gooderson, Tony Holbrook and Millie Thorold, Monty Brittain and Ann Ellis.
The teams of David Tasker and Paula Brown and Phil Thorold and Elizabeth Holbrook halved theirs games – with Holbrook sinking an amazing hole-in-one on the 16th hole.
That result was followed by a 4-4 draw at home to Sleaford. Winning pairs for Spalding were Ray Harrison and Chris Vickers, Geoff Skinner and Jean White and Keith Moore and Beryl Skinner, while Dave Barkway and Carole Holland and Neil Knighton and Sybil Thorpe halved.
Spalding mixed did, however, return to winning ways, with a 6.5-1.5 win over Belton Park.
Victories came from Ray Harrison and Chris Vickers, Pete Orwell and Yvonne Greaves, Calum Walker and Barbara Newcombe, John Newcombe and Anne Ellis, Roy Blake and Julia Colston and
Paul Tudor and Teresa Starbuck, with Howard Greaves and Elaine Harrison halving.

The competition is for teams of four, with all proceeds going to this year’s chosen charity – The Garth and Priory Schools.
