Conservatives retain district council by just one seat as leader Gary Porter among shock departures

The Conservatives has retained South Holland District Council, just, and only after a host of long-standing councillors including the leader Gary Porter lost their seats.

The South Holland Independents made some big gains as cabinet members such as Porter, Roger Gambba-Jones, Peter Coupland and Rodney Grocock all lost their seats.

They took the council 19-18.

Coun Porter said it had been “a difficult night”. “I’ve had a lovely time as leader for the last 20 years.”

Coun Rob Gibson, leader of the South Holland Independents, said: “The Conservatives have such a small majority, it’s not going to be easy for them.

“They have to talk to us and work with us.

“We got 13 councillors in 2019, we now have 18 and they’re a good mix of experienced and youthful with new ideas.

“I’m looking forward to seeing them working for their communities.”
