Celebrations start a platinum anniversary

A club to help older people in Crowland enjoyed a tasty start to its 70th birthday celebrations with a present from a local councillor.

The Crowland Over 60s club was treated to a special afternoon tea by South Holland district councillor Jim Astill.

It holds events every Friday afternoon at Trinity Court in the town as a place for the town’s older generation to meet, share a cuppa, play games or enjoy the entertainment the organisers arrange.

To fund the club and trips out, members hold events such as rummage and cake sales, but haven’t been able to do that throughout COVID.

To help make up the shortfall Coun Astill donated some of his ward council money to fund the first get together outside for a while with an afternoon tea at Vine House Farm in Deeping St Nicholas.

Now in its seventh decade, the Crowland club has been jointly organised by Carol Kilsby and Ann Savage since 2008.

“We haven’t been able to do our usual fundraising so it was lovely to get this donation,” said Ann. “We usually go on three or four trips a year but this is the first one in so long we’ve been able to do so a huge thank you to Coun Astill.”

“We call ourselves an over 60s club as we’ll still accept people over that age, but we’re mostly aged 80 onwards now including two ladies in their 90s,” added Carol.

Coun Astill said: “I’m pleased to be able to fund this for a long standing group in my area.”
