Camp moved on after “sudden increase in crime and disorder”

A group of travellers have been moved on by police from Gedney after what’s been described as a “sudden increase in crime and disorder” in the village.

The group of caravans set up camp on private land at Victory Hall in the village.

After being asked to leave its understood the members of the group have moved to a location in Sutton Bridge where police say they’re monitoring behaviour.

Inspector Gareth Boxall of Spalding Police, said:  “On Tuesday afternoon (25 June 2019) we were alerted to a number of caravans parked at Victory Hall, Gedney. Those present were trespassing there.

“Later that evening we received a report of anti-social behaviour at a neighbouring location which involved some of those residing at the Victory Hall. We used our dispersal powers under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act to keep people away from that neighbouring address but the law does not allow us to use that in respect of the caravans at the hall.

“As a result of a rise in crime and anti-social behaviour in the local area and because certain criteria were met this afternoon I have been able to use powers under a separate piece of legislation to direct those at Victory Hall, Gedney to leave.

“Shortly after 5pm this afternoon I attended with a number of officers to give that direction and I am pleased to say that all those present left a short time later.

“Regrettably the same group moved to a location near Sutton Bridge. If the criteria is met to use the same legislation again, we will do. I’m grateful for the support of our partners and the community.

“I realise that such a sudden increase in crime and disorder to Gedney must be concerning to residents. We are continuing to investigate all the crimes reported to us and this afternoon conducted a search of a vehicle in connection with this series of crimes.

“We will continue to work with our partners to monitor and resolve the situation at Sutton Bridge.”
