Stewart Barnett was the pick of the pack at a high quality June Medal event played at Spalding Golf Club last week.

The Surfleet course is now at its best and 31 of the 145 golfers played to par or better– with Barnett’s amazing 63 the highlight of the day.

Low scores were especially plentiful in the 15-28 handicap category. None were better than Barnett (80-18=62), who played an amazing ten strokes below his handicap.

Only one stroke behind was Alan Roper (80-17=63) with a nett 63 – which resulted in a three-stroke handicap reduction for the pair of them.

Robert Norman (82-15=67) just edged third spot on countback from Cameron Roy (82-15=67) after both carded a nett 67.

Other leading scores in this category: Nett 70 – Ben Blom, Michael Yould; 71 – Chris Brooks, Simon Ward, Wayne Flowers and Richard Thorold. Barnett and Roper shared the category lowest gross score prize with 80.

John Reynolds (80-12=68) came out on top in the 0-14 handicap category with a nett 68, which gave him a one stroke advantage over Adrian Sibley (81-12=69), Lloyd Chatham (72-3=69) and Andy Grimwood (69-0=69).

Other leading scores in this category were: Nett 70 – Pete Williams, Chas Lacey, Gary Palmer, Chris Ward; 71 – Chris Moxon and Phil Tweddell.

Grimwood claimed the lowest gross score prize with a superb 69 – which included four birdies.

  • A record 79 entries played in the nine-hole Wednesday evening Stableford competition – and 22 of them recorded scores under par.

Nigel Patrick (23 handicap), Matthew Richardson (9) and Chas Lacey (4) came out on top, all scoring 32 points.

  • Spalding’s mixed team returned to winning ways with a 5-3 home victory in their latest social match against Peterborough Milton.

The two captains, Peter Bridge and Jenny Wilson, led from the front with a 5&3 success, with further wins coming from Peter Gooderson and Chris Vickers (2up), Andy Thomas and Olive Gooderson (2up), Doug Garfoot and Chris Leggett (5&4) and Steve Leggett and Barbara Newcombe (4&3).

  • Simon Richardson continued his rich vein of form by winning the much-coveted Alverstone Trophy, which is played at Woodhall Spa.

From a field of 60 golfers from across the county and beyond he won the 36-hole gross and nett prizes with superb rounds of 68 and 66 at the par 71 course.

That meant Richardson finished on an eight-under par gross total of 134 – which equated to a nett 140 off his minus three handicap.

Andy Grimwood, playing off scratch, carded rounds of gross 74 and 72 to finish in third spot with a nett 146 total.
