Firefighters revisited the site of the blaze just off the A16 on Tuesday morning.

Blaze destroys field of crops

Thousands of pounds worth of crops were lost after a fire destroyed a field and combine harvester just north of Surfleet as firefighters continue to be inundated with calls in the unusually dry spell.

Around 24 acres of land between the A16 and Scoldall Lane was set alight in the blaze reported just after 6pm on Monday.

Crews from Spalding, Boston, Kirton, Doninton, Billingborough, Crowland and a water carrier from Holbeach attended.

To control the fire and put it out they used six hose reels, 10 beaters and four breathing apparatus plus machinery from a farmer to create a fire break.

One eyewitness told The Voice they had seen smoke coming from the combined harvester before the fire spread to the field.

A spokesman for Lincs Fire and Rescue said that “no injuries” were reported as a result of the fire.

* Spalding Fire Crew had already attended a straw and stubble field fire in Gedney earlier that afternoon.
Crews used six beaters, four drags and a hose reel to quell that blaze reported at 3pm.

* Another combine harvester on fire was reported on Loose Gate Road, Moulton Seas End at 11.30am on Tuesday.
Spalding Fire Crew used a hose reel to extinguish the vehicle and ensure the fire did not spread further.
