Film review – THE GAMBLER (15): Wahlberg film is worth a punt…but don’t go all in

If you were putting money on Mark Wahlberg’s latest offering The Gambler, I’d strongly suggest hedging your bets. A remake of the 1974 film starring James Caan, I found the film hard going in places. Mark Wahlberg plays Jim Bennett, a literature professor with a severe gambling addiction. He ends up owing $260,000 to Lee (Alvin Ing), the proprietor of ...

LETTER: Another off-licence for Spalding?

I was only thinking the other day, what Spalding really lacks for and desperately needs is another off-licence. I mean, in some parts of town you have to walk up to 50 yards to find an opportunity to buy alcohol. So how are those wonderfully colourful street drinkers to keep themselves adequately supplied in such an arid environment. That’s all ...

VOICE FROM THE WILDLIFE: Time to make it count

January means one thing for me. It is time again for the Big Garden Birdwatch. Have you heard of it? It is the RSPB’s annual call to arms to discover which birds use our back gardens. The idea started off in the 1970’s, when children were encouraged to spend a little bit of time one weekend in January, spotting their ...

LETTER: Problems with closing down libraries

I read in the last edition of The Voice, your news that Lincolnshire County Council is to press ahead with its plans to close many of the counties libraries. LETTER: Is there a need to refurbish gates?

I could barely believe what I read in the article in the Spalding Voice (January 15). LETTER: Will falling oil prices benefit the public?

I see on the news that Mr Cameron is pleading with companies to pass the windfall made from falling oil prices to the workforce, “obviously I want to see companies’ success passed through in terms of wage increases”. Of course, in a growing economy, one wouldn’t expect a prime minister to be pleading for such things – as wage increases ...
