Trophy time at successful snooker and billiards bash

Another hugely successful Spalding and District Snooker and Billiards League season officially ended on Friday night with its annual awards night.

A host of trophies were dished out at the Springfields Events Centre bash, as all of the competition winners and runners-up got their hands on the coveted silverware.

Among the prizes dished out was the annual Special Achievement Award, which went to Whittlesey stalwarts Laurie and Sheena Smith to mark the decades of support they have provided the league.

Those in attendance enjoyed a three-course meal and live music from Spalding-based band Boobonyx.

Match secretary Susan Lefley was delighted with how the evening went – and thanked the league’s members for their support.

She said: “It was another successful evening and it was great to have so many members there.

“It is always a favourite night of mine and it was so good to catch up with some of our lovely members and their families.

“Thanks also to everyone who donated raffle prizes and bought tickets – your generosity was overwhelming.

“The entertainment seemed to go down well too. We had lots of positive comments from those in attendance.”

There was some sad news for the league on Saturday night, though, with vice chairman Tom Lee passing away. He played a vital role within the league for more than 45 years – and will be missed by many.

“It was a terrible shock,” added Susan. “On behalf of the league, I’d like to offer our condolences to Tom’s family and pass on our best wishes.

“It’s very sad news. Tom was a lovely man and was responsible for bringing a lot of the area’s top talent into the league with his popular tournaments in Crowland.”

The league’s AGM is at Spalding Services Club on Thursday, June 11 (7.30pm).
