DOWN ON HIS LUCK: Danny Goodard (on the ball) felt Long Sutton Athletic deserved better against the leaders.

Boss Goddard bemoans luck as Magpies are grounded by league leaders

It was a case of déjà vu for Long Sutton Athletic on Saturday as they were left once again to rue a disappointing defeat.

The Magpies were beaten 2-0 at home by ChromaSport Peterborough League Division One leaders Stamford Lions.

Jake Walton (20) and Sean O’Donnell (66) got the goals at London Road to consign Danny Goddard’s side to a fourth league defeat of the season.

Sutton felt harshly done by at half-time, with Walton’s goal coming very much against the run of play. Striker Matt Cawthorn drew two fine saves from the Stamford keeper in the second period, but O’Donnell’s long range lob settled the contest.

Player/boss Goddard was left deflated by the defeat, but was at least boosted by some kind words from the Lions camp after the final whistle.

Goddard said: “It was just same old for us, really.

“We bossed the first half, but they managed to score against the run of play.

“The second half was about even, but their keeper made a string of good saves to keep us out.

“They then went and lobbed our keeper from 30 yards to make it 2-0 and kill the game.

“On a decent note for us, their manager said he thought we were one of the better teams they had played so far – so that’s a positive.”
