Ace John is top of the class at Spalding Golf Club’s Massey Cup

Teacher John Stewart handed out a golfing lesson at Spalding Golf Club’s annual Massey Cup qualifier with a 43-point score.

The 16-handicapper was four shots clear of nearest rivals Charles Lacey and Martin Green on 39 points – and saw his handicap cut by three shots as a result.

One shot further back were Jake Lilley, Dan Hines and Ben Bettinson, with Chris Hancock and Alex Callaway completing the list of eight qualifiers with 37 points each.

  • Spalding’s top men’s team kicked off their South Lincs Scratch League season with a 4.5-1.5 defeat at rivals Belton Park.

Once again skippered by Andy Grimwood, Spalding had several first team regulars missing.

With that in mind, it was still a creditable result against a team containing several young county players.

The winning pair for Spalding was Keith Hearne and Mark Cooley, with Lloyd Chatham and Wayne Wallace halving their match.

Mark Jones and his Spalding 2nd team saw their match postponed due to waterlogging of the course.

  • Club captain David Tasker and his Spalding mixed team got their summer of matches under way at home to Milton – and in bright sunshine they recorded a notable 7-1 victory.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Mike Crampton and Hannah Thorold, Andy Reedman and Millie Thorold, Phil Thorold and Dina Reedman, Martin Ward and Ann Tasker, John Camm and Deb

Ward, Bob Sutton and Sue Watson and Sandy Watson and Jenny Pipe.

  • Andy Rafferty and his Spalding 3rd team are well into their season.

They enjoyed a home 3-3 draw against North Shore, then followed that up with a narrow 3.5-2.5 loss to Sandilands

  • Spalding’s junior section continues to shine, with Tilly Garfoot winning the Lincs Girls Spring Stableford at Blankney on countback with 37 points.

Spalding player Tommy Hull has also been called up to play for the county at Stapleford Park later this month.

  • The Coronation Foursomes competition in Spalding Golf Club’s ladies’ section was played in glorious spring sunshine – which reflected some good scores.

The winners, representing Spalding in the area final, were Angela Roper and Anne Ellis with 35 points.

In second place, on count back. were Jackie Bailey Scott and Julie Gooderson.

  • In their first league match of the season, the Spalding ladies’ A team were away to Belton Woods B and, despite some close matches, they lost 2.5-1.5.

Pat West and Dianne Rafferty lost 3&2, Angela Roper and Elizabeth Holbrook lost 2&1, Claire Rylott and Ruth Atkins halved and Anita Cross and Debra Ward won 7&6.

  • Spalding beat Boston West 3-1 in a friendly match.

Paula Brown and Hannah Thorold won 3&2, Avril Norton and Beryl Clay won 3&2, Dina Freedman and Anne Ellis won 1up and Sue Matthews and Jenny Pipe lost 1 down.
