WET AND WILD: The start of race one on Sunday.

Red-hot Tom toasts another top treble at Welland Yacht Club regatta

Tom Bell’s rich vein of form at Welland Yacht Club continued on Sunday as he sealed three wins to clinch the Grounds Trophy regatta.

Some eight boats took to the water for the first race of the day, contested in fairly blustery conditions.

The race got under way with Paul Burton taking the lead on the water from Bell and Andy Prior, with Geri van Haren, Lucy Burton, Mark Holland, Niall Holland and Shelly Woolridge and Will Cook and Neal Tack following behind.

Gusty winds ensured that a few boats capsized, making for an eventful race. Although Paul Burton maintained his lead on the water, Bell and Prior kept close enough to take first and second respectively after handicap, pushing him to third.

That was a theme that would remain for the day.

With the wind slightly increasing over the midday break, the fleet dropped to seven for the second race.

Again, a couple of boats were either caught by the gust or the lull between gusts resulting in capsizes.

The top three was the same, with Bell winning from Prior and Paul Burton.

Only four boats took to the start for the final race of the day and, with the top three again the same, Bell toasted overall glory.
