Encouraging start to season for Caterham race ace Andy

The first two races in the new Caterham Racing season have proved something of a learning curve for Spalding race ace Andy Molsom.

Meets at Oulton Park and Brands Hatch have seen Molsom bag three top ten finishes – which represented a solid start as both circuits are a little unfamiliar to the Hall Place-based optometrist.

At Oulton, testing saw Molsom running in a rebuilt engine and learning the track. Having qualified eighth, a good start to the race saw him make up two places.

After a spin, Molsom rejoined the race at the back – but managed to battle back for ninth, which represented a good weekend.

At Brands, testing was again all about learning the track, as every session showed improvements.

Qualifying went well, with Molsom in fifth place on the grid for the first race and a place higher in fourth for race two.

A wheelspin at the start of the first race saw him drop a few places and after a great race, he finished 8th.

A good start in race two put him in fourth place until near the end, when a small mistake going into Paddock Hill bend lost two places, and he finished sixth.

Molsom said: “It was a positive start to the year, at two unfamiliar circuits. We now move onto Cadwell Park in mid May, which should be a great weekend with a lot of local support.”

This year’s championship consists of 15 races at eight different circuits, including a summer visit to the former F1 track at Zandvoort in Holland.

Molsom added: “Zandvoort is situated close to the beach, so it will be great for my family as we are making it a long weekend.”
