A16 back open following lorry fire that melted road after ‘Herculean’ effort

The A16 at Crowland opened ahead of schedule last night (Sunday) after Thursday’s lorry fire melted the road.

Lincolnshire County Council worked through the weekend to get the road repaired after the dramatic incident.

A spokesman for Lincolnshire County Council said: “Expert road crews worked tirelessly to get the road back open after huge lorry fire that melted the road surface and forced a complete closure of the road near the busy roundabout

Craig Norbury’s picture of the blaze.

“It took just over 48 hours to get the stretch of the A16 at Crowland that was melted in a lorry fire back in action.

“Work crews from LCC were in frantic action immediately after the event which saw a lorry burst into flames. The incident happened across both sides of the busy road within metres of the busy roundabout.

“Nobody was hurt in the vehicle fire, but temperatures were so high during the blaze that the surface of the road was literally melted with torched materials from the lorry’s cargo fused into the road itself.

“With the road closed, the emergency repair teams sprang into action removing the ruined road surface and rebuilding the sides of the road where the damage was greatest.

“The fast turnaround saw an entire new top layer of the road laid, treated and the white lines painted.

“The Herculean effort by LCC and the crew on site saw the road reopened in just over 48 hours, meaning that the highly important route was able to be used again by 10pm on Sunday.”

Coun Richard Davies, executive member for highways said: “What a great effort by everyone involved to get this section of damaged road up and running.

“The damage to the road surface was so intense that smaller repairs were out of the question and a full resurface of the road was the only option we had.

“We worked extremely hard to get this road stripped back and rebuilt as quickly as possible and the results can be seen for themselves.

“I want to thank everyone involved in this swift repair and I also want to thank all road users for their patience whilst we carried out the work in a very short timeframe.”
