Young Spalding United team want more girls to join their success story

A rapidly improving team within the Spalding United Youth set-up are calling on more girls from South Holland to follow in their footsteps and join them.

Girls in school years 3, 4, 5 and even 6 are wanted by the Tulips – with the progress of the under-10 side highlighted as a great reason for them to give football a try.

Although they’ve only been playing for six months, the young Tulips have earned rave reviews this season in a league that mostly pits them against boys.

Boss Jason Guy, who couldn’t be prouder of the team, admits that it’s time to get more girls involved.

He has a large quota of under-9s playing for the under-10s and would prefer that they became a team of their own in the future.

With home games played at Spalding Priory School, it’s a great chance for any South Holland youngsters to try their hand at football.

Guy said: “We’re always looking for help. It’s all about development for the girls, more than the actual football side of it.

“We have nine under-10s and nine under-9s training with us, plus a few younger girls who just want to train – which is great.

“There is actually only one other girls team – Boston Community – that we play in our league. The rest of the games are against boys, and we’ve had some really good feedback from them.

“For example, Boston United have always been very kind and complementary to us.

“We’d invite other girls to come and give us a try – the first training session is free.

“We feel we’re quite well run within the Spalding United Youth set-up and it’s surprising just how well we’ve done.

“We’re not there for the results, it’s all about the enjoyment. Some of the girls have improved so much and we’re so proud of them.

“I’m hoping to take this team as far through the age groups as we can and will stay playing against the boys. The travel for girls’ leagues is too far.

“We’ve only been going for six months, but we’ve seen a big improvement in all of the girls. They enjoy each other’s company and play as a team. What I’d say to other girls is; look at what this group has achieved, you can do the same.”

Any girls interested in joining should call manager Jay on 07500 324242.Training is on Thursday night (6pm-7pm) at Spalding High School Hall.

There is a cost of £2.50 per session, but the first one is free.
