Young Spalding IBC stars suffer agonising defeats at under-25 finals

Top Spalding Indoor Bowls Club talents Jordan Philpott and Chelsea Tomlin had their hopes of under-25 National singles glory dashed as they both lost in the latter stages of their respective competitions

The men’s and women’s events were staged at the same venue, City of Ely IBC, over the weekend.

Tomlin beat C Edwards, from the Whiteknights club, in a tie break in her first match at the finals, which was the last 16 of the country.

But in her quarter-final match, she lost to eventual runner-up L Smith (Westlecot) in straight sets.

Philpott won two matches, first beating Dolphin’s O’Thake in a tie break to book a place in the last eight – where he faced S Dunn from the Falcon club.

Each player won a set to force another tie break for Philpott, which he won to reach the semi-finals.

He was up against local favourite E Elmore who was playing at his home club, with Philpott again putting in a good performance.

He found himself in yet another tie break, but unfortunately it was one too many, with Elmore securing the victory and booking his place in the final, which he won to claim the national title.
