GIVE IT A GO: Spalding Cycling Club hope to see some new faces at the Castle Sports Complex this weekend.

Young cyclists of all abilities can ‘Go Ride’ with Spalding Cycling Club

Spalding Cycling Club’s 2016 season gets under way this weekend with a choice of non-competitive activities to get everyone – whatever their age and ability – out on their bikes.

This Saturday sees the first session of “Go Ride”, the British Cycling programme for young people aged five-16 – and the club want to invite everyone to join them at the Castle Sports Complex’s playing field (10am-noon).

Led by qualified coaches Stewart Elderkin and Shane Norton and with the assistance of other members of the club, Spalding CC welcome young people of all abilities and encourage everyone to take part as fully as they can.

The sessions teach the necessary skills to make riders more competent and safer cyclists, while also having fun. Any type of bike can be used as long as it is roadworthy – and a cycling helmet must be worn.

“Go Ride” is not about, racing, so don’t be put off. But if that’s the way riders wish to go, Spalding can support all down that path. Some of the club’s “Go Riders” have progressed to racing, but the chief purpose is to get people cycling at a level that they are comfortable with.

This year’s “Go Ride” sessions take place on the following dates: Sat, March 12; Sat, April 23; Sat, May 21; Sat, June 18; Sat, July 16; Sat, August 6; Sat, September 3.

You can call Stewart Elderkin on 07831 737715 for more information or go to www.spaldingcc.org.uk and see the “Go Ride” page in the activities tab.

  • For cyclists aged 16 and over, Spalding Cycling Club offer a choice of Saturday morning rides every week, leaving the Gibbons Cycles shop at 9am – with the aim to return by 1pm.

The steady paced ride covers about 35-40 miles and is ideal for newcomers and those returning to cycling.

The other, for more experienced and fitter cyclists, is a faster paced ride which covers about 50 miles.

Each ride includes a stop for coffee.

If you are training for or considering doing a sponsored charity ride this year, these rides help provide valuable experience and build up the mileage to make your chosen event more enjoyable.

The designated ride leaders will post details of route, destination and any other relevant information by the Friday of each week on the “rides” pages on the club’s forum spaldingcc.forumchitchat.com.

  • Discussions regarding this year’s ladies only rides are still ongoing – and when confirmed that will be posted on the club forum and website.
