Whaley feels draw ‘was fair’ despite Spalding United’s fine first half showing at Coleshill

Boss Brett Whaley admitted that a draw was the right result as Spalding United were held 1-1 by hosts Coleshill Town on Saturday.

Spalding made a flying start to the Pitching In NPL Midlands Division clash at Pack Meadow as striker Dylan Edge netted on five minutes.

However, the hosts hit back instantly through Josh Willis (7) and then witheld a Tulips onslaught that saw chances galore created.

Coleshill forced Michael Duggan into a host of saves after the break, though, leaving Whaley to admit that a draw was a fair reflection of the contest.

He said: “If you look at Coleshill, they were seventh last year and have pretty much the same side.

“So it was always going to be a tough away game for us.

“I think their manager said afterwards that we probably should have been 5-1 up at half time – which I think is a fair assessment.

“The flip side to that, though, is that Michael Duggan had to make a number of top saves in the second half.

“With that in mind, I think a draw was perhaps a fair result on the day.

“I do think that this is perhaps a game that we’ll look back on later in the season and think that it was perhaps a bettter point than we consider it to be right now.

“For now, we take the draw and move on.”

Ahead of the game, Spalding learned that right back Aaron Hart may face up to two months on the sidelines – meaning Whaley may be forced into the market given that reserve full-back Scott Floyd has left to join rivals Corby Town.

Tulips: Duggan, Clifton, Marhsall, Jones, Stainfield, Cartwright, Draper, Broccoli (O’Brien 79), Hilliard (Rolt 64), Moreman, Edge. Not used: Harris, Apindia, Sandy.

Attendance: 90.
