Volunteers Co-operate for blooming Holbeach town

A community space in Holbeach has been given a refresh by volunteers as part of Lincolnshire Co-op’s Big Co-op Clean.

A team of 22 put on their gardening gloves together with Holbeach in Bloom and freshened up the area around All Saints Church on Tuesday, June 5.

The volunteers sourced from a number of different local Co-op services pulled weeds and filled the borders along paths and railings with new flowers.

Planters around the grounds were also spruced up and re-planted, and grass around the churchyard was cut back and tidied up.

Funeral arranger at Holbeach Funeral Home Richard Moore said: “It’s been a brilliant experience. Everyone’s enjoyed getting involved and playing their part so the area can look its best for the Holbeach community and the church.”

Lincolnshire Co-op member Helen Rowley from Holbeach also took part and said: “It’s great to be able to say, ‘I helped with that’ and there’s a really nice atmosphere.”

Chairman of Holbeach in Bloom Graham Rudkin said: “I jumped at the chance to get Lincolnshire Co-op involved.

“It’s been a great help and a good community event as there’s been people here not just from Holbeach, but all over the district,” he said.

Holbeach in Bloom is at full tilt in the town ahead of this year’s competition where there are high hopes to achieve another gold medal.

Lincolnshire Co-op chief financial officer Steve Galjaard, member Helen Rowley and post office area manager Sue Turner.

The town was awarded top honours in East Midlands in Bloom last year and volunteers have been working hard to keep the gold medals coming to South Holland.

There is also the chance for residents to win a cash prize in a great competition for front gardens in the town.

The Voice has joined forces with Holbeach in Bloom for this year’s competition which is offering a top prize of £50.

The town is also set to be decked in red, white and blue hanging baskets to mark the centenary of the First World War.

While your front garden is looking at its best, send a picture to us before the closing date of July 14 and the judges will visit before choosing a winner. The second prize is £30 and £20 for third.
