Veteran duo Beba and Tiller share Spalding and District Snooker and Billiards League’s top prize

The curtain came down on another Spalding and District Snooker and Billiards League season with the annual trophy presentation evening on Friday night.

All of the 2021/22 season’s trophy winners got their hands on silverware at the Spalding Services Club bash – which included snooker Division One winners Pyramid A and billiards champions Donington.

The traditional dinner and dance also saw the coveted Highest Achievement Award shared by league veterans Derek Beba and Mick Tiller, while former long-serving league president Bill Parker made a welcome appearance.

Other notable prize winners saw Division Three player Lester Gaunt win the overall highest snooker break award with a 93, while Mick Cooper’s 91 gave him the best billiards break.

The league’s match secretary Susan Lefley, who made the highest snooker break of any lady player last season, felt the night was a great success.

“It was a really good evening,” she said: “After how the past few years have been, it was great to have everyone together.

“It’s always nice when the league comes together to celebrate the season.

“It was lovely to see Derek Beba and Mick Tiller win our Highest Achievement Award.

“Derek has played in the league for around 50 years.

“His claim to fame in the league is that he won all three competitions in the 1988/89 season. That equates to winning Division One, the KO Cup and the Norey Cup! Mick was also part of that famous team.

“I think everyone in the league will be familiar with Derek reminding them that they’ll never be able to match what his team achieved.

“Mick is still a regular in the league at 86 years young.

“He started playing in the early 1970s, representing Holbeach United Services Club.

“He also played for Lutton Marsh, Tydd Golf Club and Long Sutton Conservative Club and won several team honours.

“More recently he’s won the Division Two title with Sutton Bridge and has reached singles/pairs finals too.

“Both players have been great members of the league and are deserving of the joint award.

“It was also lovely to see Bill (Parker) make an appearance on the night.”

The new season should start in Septemeber.
