Two big clashes over Easter are key for Holbeach United’s title ambitions

The ChromaSport UCL Premier Division title race should look a lot clearer come 5pm on Monday.

That’s the verdict of Holbeach United player/boss Tom Roberts, who will lead his side into two tough tests over Easter.

A trip to third-placed Newport Pagnell Town on Saturday (3pm) and a home derby date with Wisbech Town on Easter Monday (3pm) await the Tigers, with nothing but six points required.

Unbeaten leaders Kemspston Rovers – who are now eligible for promotion to step four – continue to lead the way, but they face tricky games against Eynesbury Rovers and Pagnell themselves.

Roberts hopes that results go his way – and is excited by the Easter games.

“They are two good games for us,” enthused the Holbeach chief. “Pagnell have been in great form and we know all about Wisbech.

“They are attractive games for us and the fans, so hopefully they’ll be out in force to back us.

“It’s a big weekend in the title race. We’re taking it game by game, but if we can gain points on Kempston we’ll still be in with a shot.

“Confidence is high in the camp and we’ll just keep doing what we can.”

Holbeach were come into the weekend clashes in a positive mood after Wednesday night’s UCL KO Cup semi-final win over Wisbech at Carter’s Park.

The Tigers booked their place in the last four with a 1-0 victory over Boston Town last Wednesday night. Chris Ward grabbed the only goal at Carter’s Park.

Division One side Peterborough Sports progressed to the final with a 2-0 win over Cogenhoe United on Tuesday night and await the Tigers the traditional season finale at  Deeping’s Haydon Whitham Stadium on Monday, May 2 (3pm).

Ahead of that final, the Tigers have a horrible fixture pile-up – including two four-game weeks – to contend with before the season ends. Including the two Easter matches, they must play 13 league games before April 30.

Roberts added: “That run of fixtures certainly doesn’t help us. All we can do is try and keep the lads fresh and hungry.

“We knew it was coming – so we’ll just have to deal with it.

“We’re underdogs, but capable of going on a run.”

Holbeach go into the games in fourth place, 15 points behind leaders Kempston with three games in hand.
