Traffic nightmare for Spalding motorists

Commuters faced motoring misery this morning (Thursday) with queues building around Spalding.

Problems on the roads included roadworks on Wardentree Lane where Western Power are carrying out the emergency repair of an underground cable while a broken-down vehicle near the McDonalds roundabout on the A151 also backed up traffic.

One irate motorist, who wished to remain anonymous said: “It took me an extra half an hour extra compared with the usual drive in to Spalding from Holbeach.

“Traffic seemed to be backed up in several different directions. I tried about six different routes through town but each one was full of traffic.”

Another motorist said: “It’s normally a 20-minute journey from Sutterton to Spalding but it took me over 45 minutes. I was forced to take a detour across country which added another five miles on to my journey.”

The roadworks on Wardentree Lane are due to Western Power carrying out emergency repair works with three-way traffic lights being put in place.

A spokesman for Western Power, said: “The work is to carry out repairs on an underground cable. We found a fault early yesterday morning which affected a couple of properties.

“They were put on a generator quite quickly so were not without power for long, but we carried out repairs to the cable throughout yesterday.

“The repairs have been completed and we now have to reinstate the road back to the standard of before. We’re working with contractors to complete that work as soon as possible.”
