Tip times call as group gets going

Fly tipping in South Holland would be improved if the recycling centre was open every day, according to district councillor Anthony Casson, as he revealed the new enviro-crime team had handed out 335 notices in its first few months.

He was asked if seven-day operating would be helpful and told South Holland District Council: “I do believe it would be a lot better if it was open every day.”
Coun Casson also told the meeting that since the appointment of a company to tackle issues including fly-tipping, littering and graffiti, it was having an effect.
Kingdom PLC has had a team of three covering the area from March in which time 335 fixed penalty notices were issued, 329 for littering or spitting and six for fly-tipping.
Coun Michael Booth asked for the statistics and enquired if they had been to Sutton Bridge as he hadn’t seen them.
“They are going to other towns, though I admit they have been in Spalding more as that’s where the most foot fall is,” Coun Casson said. “I’m sure with our enviro-crime team we’ve got and our officers it’s better that we’ve had in the past.”
He added there had been 20 reported fly-tips in Long Sutton and 15 in Sutton Bridge during the last quarter.
The team from Kingdom is based at the district council offices in Priory Road. They are in uniform and have the power to hand-out fixed penalty notices for a range of offences. They work in addition to the existing community wardens already employed in South Holland.
“The enviro-team is helping a lot. The total fly-tips in the last quarter are 551 across the district so it’s a huge problem,” added Coun Casson.
