Teachers take strike action

Classes were disrupted for some students in South Holland this week when a teaching union went on strike.

Members of the National Education Union staged a walkout on Wednesday as part of a series of planned industrial action.

All schools in England and Wales were affected, with some closing to specific year groups and others open as usual.

In South Holland, there were different responses to the situation across a number of schools.

Students at the University Academy in Long Sutton were staying at home if they were in years 7, 8, 9 and 10.

“We appreciate that industrial action is disruptive and you may need to change your plans or working arrangements.

“Vulnerable pupils will be able to attend school under the supervision of our staff,” the school website said.

At the Cowley Academy, Donington, students were told to attend and to also take homework, study materials and reading books with them.

Spalding High School was open to all students throughout the day.

“There will be some impact on classes during the strike where colleagues have made the decision to participate in the industrial action.

“This looks to be limited to very few colleagues and very few classes. All students should bring homework or private study,” said the school website.

Primary schools varied in their response to the action.

Pupils at Monkshouse Primary School were all in as usual while at St John The Baptist they were told it was non-uniform.

They were also told to wear clothes suitable for sports.

The John Harrox Primary School, Moulton, was open as usual along with Holbeach Primary Academy, Pinchbeck Church of England Primary School and Whaplode Church of England Primary School among others.

The union is planning to take further action on March 1 in the East Midlands and March 15 and 16 in all schools in England and Wales.
