CHANGE: Skipper Rob Ambrose (left) is without Jack Barratt (centre) on Saturday, meaning Tim Norris (right) will be recalled.

Table-topping Spalding Town currently in their best form under skipper Ambrose

Happy captain Rob Ambrose can’t remember Spalding Town enjoying a better run of form during his four-year spell in the role.

Town made it seven wins on the spin last Saturday by beating Stamford Town to move 28 points clear at the top of the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division.

Next in the firing line are Bourne 2nd at Spalding Grammar School this Saturday (1.30pm).

Ambrose and his side are confident of extending their winning run, but are wary of their opponents.

“We probably are playing as well as I can remember during my time as captain,” said Ambrose. “Even when we won this league a few years ago, we had a few wobbles.

“At the moment you can see that all of the players are flowing with confidence and that they are enjoying their cricket with us.

“We’ve had selection issues in the past when players weren’t turning up every week. That seems to have sorted itself out now – and it has coincided with us winning a lot of games.

“We’ll aim to carry this run on against Bourne 2nd.

“Obviously they’ve got a very strong first team, so you’d expect them to have plenty of strong players in the second side.

“As we’ve been doing all season, we’ll just focus on ourselves.”

Bourne come into the game in fourth place, some 42 points behind leaders Town with a game in hand. They’ve won their last three games, seeing off Woodhall Spa 2nd last time out.

Ambrose thinks the recent bad weather makes the pitches in South Lincolnshire feel more like wickets you’d expect to see in April, so isn’t hopeful of a runfest between two of the league’s leading lights.

He added: “Normally by now we’re enjoying nice hard pitches. Sadly the rain has turned them into the kind of wickets you’d expect in April.

“It means you really have to work for your runs and there’s always a chance that games can be called off.

“Whatever the conditions, we go into the game with a strong side and we’re full of confidence.”

Bowler Jack Barratt – who has taken 17 wickets at an average of 10.41 – misses Saturday’s clash, with his place likely to go to the returning Tim Norris.
