Table-tennis round-up: Fixtures are still piling up after quiet evening of action

Last Wednesday night proved to be another quiet evening for the Spalding and District Table Tennis League.

The evening had been scheduled for the semi-finals of the Marylands Cup, but one match had already been played.

So, with eight free tables, it was hoped that some of the unfinished and postponed matches might be caught up.

However, with Easter holidays among other things, just four matches were started and only two completed.

In round two of the Guardian Cup, Hurricane Brothers faced Aches and Pains.

The former are chasing the Division Two title, while the latter are close to the foot of Division One.

Of the four games two were close, as anticipated, but nevertheless Aches and Pains came out ahead with three wins and a 125-112 lead.

Garry Wilkinson took both his while Hannah Gilbert scored a surprise win; George Wallis won for Hurricanes.

The added handicap was just one giving Aches and Pains a pass into another semi-final.

The other completed match was in Division Two.

The father and son duo, Dave and Tom Coley, of Chunky and Monkey Jnr faced Castle Sports.

With the latter struggling to hold their own in the division a home win was no surprise.

Dave had no problem with his singles, winning them and the doubles in three straight.

However, Tom was forced into five ends in both his, going down to Tony Dorey in the first but coming from behind to take the other for a 4-1 win.

Also in Division Two, Pingers met Skidlids.

Like their match earlier in the season, only Phil Knowles was available and the result came out the same with one game to each.

Richard Matthews scored for Skidlids, that point moving them into second spot in the division.

The actual match scheduled was also incomplete with Aches and Pains up against Jokers, who only had Guntars Briedes available.

He took his first game but Wilkinson won the other on the final point of the final end to leave the match level.
