Table Tennis round-up: Depleted Jokers see off Bladerunners in Guardian Cup

Regular fixtures took a break as the Spalding and District Table Tennis League started the Guardian Cup last week.

In what is the third of the league’s cup events, four singles are played – each to 33 points – and the scores totalled.

After that a hidden handicap is added to one of the teams to find the winners.

Round One had seven matches, with Nets and Edges having a bye, but only four took place at the Castle Sports Complex.

The top match saw Bladerunners take on Jokers, though the latter were without their number one.

However, Phil Coote took the first game 33-22 for Jokers and from then Blades were struggling to pull the tie back.

The final score was 121-103 to Bladerunners, but Jokers received a further 34 to take the tie by 16.

South Holland also suffered a setback in their first game against Mine’s a Pint, going down 32-33 – not much on paper but enough to tilt the tie.

Holland took the other three games for a 131-90 total, but the handicapper gave the Pinters 75 more, so they went through.

The final top flight match saw JDM take all four games for a 132 maximum against Aches and Pains.

The latter managed 82, including an outrageous edge, and that proved to be just enough for they received an additional 51.

An all Division Two tie had MatDuf facing the juniors of Win for a Curry.

Dylan Taylor took the first end for Curry, not altogether a surprise, but MatDuf won the other three to establish a lead of 123-96.

Curry received 24 points to miss out by just three and leave MatDuf going through.

Win for a Curry had the consolation of earlier completing their Marylands Cup round two match.

Facing a 0-2 deficit they took all three remaining games off Pingers, including the deciding doubles on the final point to go through to the semi-final and face Hurricane Brothers.

JDM also faced a 0-2 scoreline against Aches and Pains and took the first game, but the second went against them to settle the tie so the doubles was conceded.
