Sunday football: Title rivals both bag victories but Holbeach United Sunday still favourites

The Spalding Sunday League title race remains a two-horse race after rivals Sutton Bridge Sunday and Holbeach United picked up contrasting wins over the weekend.

Odds-on favourites Holbeach cruised to an 11-0 victory at Spalding Wanderers to stay third, while table-toppers Bridge ground out a 1-0 triumph at Jubilee.

Starting with the Tigers, Tim Cole and Josh Ford’s side made it eight wins from as many matches with another dominant display.

Co-player/boss Ford led by example at Cowbit Playing Field, helping himself to a hat-trick.

Also on target were Darren Edey (2), Adam Jackson (2), Jon Fairweather, Scott Powley, Billy Smith and joint player/boss Cole.

Jackson’s double moved him two goals (22 in total) behind team-mate Smith (24) in the race for the league’s golden boot.

Hobeach have now won all 19 of their games since forming in the summer scoring 169 goals (an average of nearly nine a game).

Sutton Bridge had to work much harder for their three points, with Paul Rudkin’s Jubilee pushing them all the way at Monkshouse Lane.

Jack Murley’s second-half goal was the difference, while Jubilee had sub Paul Harper sent off.

Bridge are five points clear at the top and nine ahead of Holbeach Sunday, but the Tigers have five games in hand.

Elsewhere in the division, Punchbowl Tigers kept their hopes of a top three finish alive by beating defending champions Pinchbeck United Sunday 3-0.

Also on winning form were Mulberry, who edged out basement boys South Holland United Clarets 1-0 at Holbeach St Marks.
