Spalding United smashed as Holbeach United are held and Moulton Harrox march on

Spalding United slipped to 12th place in Evo-Stik League First Division South after a 5-0 drubbing at title-chasing Shaw Lane Aquaforce on Saturday, while Holbeach United were held to a 1-1 draw at Northampton Sileby Rangers in the ChromaSport UCL Premier Division.

The Tulips travelling to Barnsley without unavailable boss Marcus Ebdon and absent number two Danny Hussey on Saturday, meaning that director of football Bob Don-Duncan and senior players took charge of the contest.

They trailed 1-0 at the break after a goal from James Walshaw (13), before things got very messy in the second period.

That’s because Gavin Allott (57), Lee Bennett (69) and Adam Priestley (77 and 84) all netted to sentence Spalding to an eighth away league loss of the campaign.

The defeat in the biggest the Tulips have suffered all season and the heaviest of Ebdon’s tenure as boss.

Meanwhile, the Tigers are now sixth in the UCL table after blowing a 1-0 lead at Fernie Fields.

Speedy striker Sean Coughlan notched to give Holbeach a 1-0 half-time lead, but Dalton Bettles levelled 20 minutes from time for a Sileby side that began the game in the bottom four.

Holbeach must now regroup ahead of away dates at Kempston Rovers (Tuesday, 7.45pm) and Huntingdon Town (Thursday, 7.45pm).

Down in the ChromaSport PDFL, Moulton Harrox took a huge step towards winning the Premier Division title.

The unbeaten leaders beat second-placed Peterborough Sports Reserves 4-2 at Broad Lane thanks to goals from Jonny Clay, Ollie Maltby and Ian Bradbury (2).

It’s now 25 league wins and a draw for Moulton from their 26 games, with 13 more points needed to guarantee the title.

Behind them, Pinchbeck United are now just two points off second place having earned a 4-1 victory at ICA Sports. Tony Edwards (2), Tyler Wright and Louis Sae-Be bagged for Ian Dunn’s side.

Elsewhere in the top tier, Crowland Town were handed a 4-1 home reverse by Netherton United.

More football to follow throughout the week at www.spaldingvoice.co.uk and in Thursday’s edition of The Spalding and South Holland Voice.
