Spalding United finally click in Deeping demolition – but Pat wants more signings

Pat Rayment was left purring after finally seeing his Spalding United side show what they are capable of on Tuesday night.

The Tulips cruised to an impressive 3-0 win at UCL Premier Division side Deeping Rangers thanks to a double from Adam Millson and Mitch Griffiths’ strike.

Having seen his side flatter to deceive so far in pre-season, Spalding supremo Rayment felt his side stepped it up a notch in the second half at the Haydon Witham Stadium.

But the Tulips chief admits he’s still looking to bring in as many as four players ahead of the start of the Evo-Stik League First Division South season on August 15.

He said: “We finally came to party in the second half.

“I wasn’t too happy in the first half, but it just clicked after that. You’d have paid to watch us play, it was exceptional.

“Have we finally arrived? You know me, I always want more. But it was very encouraging.

“I was pleased to see Adam Millson shine, too. Like a number of our players, he’s not shown his best in pre-season so far. But that was much more like it from him.

“I do feel we need between two and four new faces, though. We’re in urgent need of a central defender and some experience.

“Losing Jamie Stevens, Chris Hall and Michael Leary was never part of the plan, as we need a few old heads to go with our young and exciting squad.”

Next up for Spalding is their friendly finale at Skegness Town on Saturday (3pm).

It’s possible that Rayment will have concluded at least one deal by then.

  • Elsewhere on Tuesday night, Long Sutton Athletic earned a 6-2 victory over Holbeach Bank in their final pre-season fixture before Saturday’s ChromaSport Peterborough League Division One opener at home to Stamford Belvedere (2pm).

Matty Cawthorn led the way with a double for the Magpies, who are making fine progress under new boss Danny Goddard.
