Spalding United eyeing maximum points from festive football fixtures

Spalding United want to give their fans the perfect Christmas present – maximum points over the festive period.

Having seen Tuesday night’s trip to Gresley postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, the Tulips now turn their attention to three very winnable games in the space of nine days.

Marcus Ebdon’s charges host seventh-placed Basford United on Saturday (3pm), before visiting Lincoln United on Boxing Day (2pm) and then welcoming Gresley to the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field on December 28 (3pm).

The visit of Basford will represent something of a new experience for Ebdon, as he bids to bounce back from a league loss for the first time in his stint as Tulips chief.

He’s confident that the 2-0 Stafford reverse was just a blip – and is hoping his side prove just that over the festive period.

“We go into every game expecting to win,” said the former Peterborough United professional. “But it’s fair to say that the next three games are ones we’ll be hoping to take maximum points from.

“Fingers crossed, the Stafford performance and result was just a blip. The lads have been superb for me in every other game.

“Basford will be an interesting one on Saturday, they’ve undergone a lot of changes since we last played them. It won’t be easy for us.

“Lincoln and Gresley likewise, but we’ll go into those games with a winning mentality.”

Ebdon revealed that he is also looking to add to his squad ahead of Saturday’s game. He admits to having “a few irons in the fire”, but is adamant that his wafer-thin squad needs strengthening.

That notion is further enhanced by key suspensions, with striker Jake Newman unavailable until after Christmas and top scorer Josh Moreman beginning his ban on Boxing Day.
