Spalding Town show some “swagger” in big win over rivals Market Deeping 2nd

Spalding Town stormed back to the top of the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division with a nine-wicket victory at rivals Market Deeping 2nd on Saturday.

Forced to bowl first, Town limited their hosts to 145-9 at Outgang Road, but were left frustrated by their inability to bowl Deeping out.

They shared the wickets out nicely, but Cameron Roy picked up four-fer on what was his best performance of the season so far.

That target proved no trouble for Spalding and their explosive batting line-up, with Hafiz Majeed (80 not out) and Warren Nel (54 not out) firing them to 149-1 and 16 match points.

Rob Ambrose’s side are now 12 points ahead of Deeping, but they have played a game more.

The skipper was very pleased with what he saw – and now feels Town can power to the title with seven wins from their final seven games.

He said: “To be honest, I felt we should have bowled them out for 100.

“We let their last few put on a few too many runs – but, in truth, we’d have chased down 250 on Saturday.

“It was the best pitch we’ve played on and Warren and Majeed looked so confident and in control.

“I was very impressed with Cameron, he’s bowled well this year without all that much reward. He got that on Saturday with a superb spell.

“We wanted to go there and win with a bit of a swagger to let them know how good we are.

“I’m happy that we’ve done that. Yes, it’s a little annoying that we didn’t bowl them out, but I’m no confident that we’ll win our last seven games and that’ll be enough for the title.”

Next up for Town is the South Holland derby with Long Sutton at Spalding Grammar School on Saturday (1.30pm). Warren Nel and Jack Barratt are both unavailable for the clash.

  • Spalding Town 3rd suffered a resounding defeat against Boston 3rd in SLBL Division Two on Saturday.

Town bowled their hosts out for 128 at the Mayflower, with Jacques Ripley (3-17) and Andrew Cook (3-32) taking three wickets apiece.

However, that proved way too many with Boston blowing Spalding away for just 25 in reply to take a 103-run win.
