Spalding Town CC return to the league summit

Spalding climbed to the top of the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division by hammering Stamford Town on Saturday.

Ahead of the top of the table meeting with the Skegness side they toppled, Spalding made light work of Saturday’s away fixture, winning by 201 runs.

It came thanks to a huge partnership from captain Josh Newton (91) and Jonathan Miles (82) who were the only two batsmen in the whole game to score more than 10 runs.

Batting at three and four respectively, Spalding were in a spot of trouble after being put in with both opener Jon Manton (4) and Joseph Broomfield back in the hutch.

But Newton and Miles batted superbly to get the vast majority of Spalding’s runs in their 238 all out.

A 5-37 from Stamford’s Brett Bennett saw the visitors all out in the 43rd over.
Spalding’s bowlers ensured the game was over in double quick time with Julian Wilson leading the way claiming 6-20 in 9.2 overs.

Brandon Andrews (2-10) picked up key wickets at the top of the order before Roy Tilley (2-1) played his part in wrapping up the tail.

Stamford were all out for 37 in just 19.2 overs.

Afterwards news filtered through that Skegness had surprisingly lost at home to Freiston having been bowled out for 123 chasing 150.

* Spalding 2nd lost by three wickets to Claypole in Division One.

The Memorial Ground side posted 182 all out in their overs with numbers seven and nine Spyke Stainton (28) and

Harry DeCamps (35) top scoring to give the bowlers something to defend after the hosts had slipped to 87-6.

In the reply Claypole looked to be cruising at 151-3 thanks in part to Joe Attewell and John North (53 not out).

However four wickets went down for five runs to give Spalding hope, Eddie Seymour (2-32) and Chris Green (3-36) striking.

North though knocked off all the remaining runs to seal the win for this side with just over five overs remaining.

* A batting collapse where Spalding 3rd lost nine wickets for six runs condemned them to a heavy defeat at Boston 3rd.
They had restricted the visitors to Spalding Grammar School to 172-7 in the opening 45 overs.
The reply also started reasonably well as they reached 31 for 1 with Ollie Dring leading the way with 12.
However the dramatic collapse left them 37 all out in 16.4 overs.
