Spalding Christmas Tree in a past year.

Spalding starts getting festive

Spalding is getting in the festive mood with celebrations in the town centre on Saturday.

Games, competitions, food, crafts and gift stalls will all be in the town centre from 11am to 5pm.
Entertainment includes a giant snow globe, vintage carousel and swing boat as well as a pop-up vintage theatre in the town’s South Holland Centre.
Live music and street entertainment will also be on offer, including the cast of this year’s pantomime, Cinderella, which is will be taking to the stage at the South Holland Centre next month.
Santa’s little helpers will come from the Rhubarb Theatre Company and there will be prizes for the Nutcracker Trail (see page 16).
There will also be a fancy dress competition with the winner being invited to turn on the town’s Christmas lights after carols by candlelight at 4.30pm.
“I am delighted that we are able to run this popular event again, which will attract a great number of residents and visitors to the town centre to have fun and support some of our fantastic local businesses,” said Coun Rodney Grocock, portfolio holder for town improvement.
The event is the latest to be funded by South Holland District Council’s town centre improvement budget, following last month’s Pumpkin Festival.
The council has also fenced-off the town centre planters and benches while poison has been put down to try and get rid of rats.
“The barriers are in place to stop the public or other animals coming into contact with it. Longer term plans to stop rats returning are currently under consideration,” said a council spokesman

A torrential downpour on Wednesday evening saw the decision taken to close the doors at the South Holland Centre.
A film was cancelled and refunds or re-booking arranged. It was open again on Saturday for the Best in Comedy show and there have been no problems.
